Got Questions? We've Got Answers!

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is like giving your website a megaphone in a crowded market. It's a vital online marketing strategy aimed at attracting potential customers to your website. The main objective? To optimize your website so that it ranks high for specific keywords on search engines. This involves fine-tuning your site's technical aspects, enhancing its content, and securing backlinks from other reputable websites.

SEO typically falls into three categories:

  1. Keywords and Rankings
  2. On-Page SEO
  3. Off-Page SEO

SEO wizards work their magic to align with each category's ranking factors, which search engines use to decide where your website appears in search results.

Think of SEO as your digital storefront's welcome sign in a bustling marketplace. Every day, millions of users turn to search engines to seek information, products, services, and solutions for various needs—recipes, guides, flights, entertainment, and more.

Did you know? A whopping 68% of web traffic originates from search engines, with 53% coming from organic search results—those unpaid listings that SEO can enhance. Check out the image below for a visual representation:

In essence, organic search (SEO) and paid search (SEA, or search engine advertising) dominate web traffic.

Even our offline adventures are heavily influenced by search engines. We rely on Google and Apple Maps for navigation, local search results to discover nearby services, and online reviews to make informed decisions about where to go. And when we're ready to go, we count on search engine-based services to guide us there—whether by car, public transit, or foot.

Now, picture this: What if your business, products, or services don't show up in search results? What if potential customers can't find you online to purchase your offerings or locate your physical store? Chances are, they'll opt for your competitors instead.

SEO works wonders in helping users discover your business, products, and services online—and ultimately making purchases. This not only boosts your online visibility but also enhances your offline presence.

By optimizing your website for search engines, SEO increases your chances of securing top positions for keywords crucial to your business. And here's why ranking high matters:

Why Aim for Page One?

Studies reveal that a staggering 31.7% of users click on the first organic search result (position one), while a whopping 75.1% of all clicks go to the top three search results. Beyond that, user engagement significantly drops with each subsequent position.

This behavior underscores the importance of securing a spot on the first page of search results—particularly within the top ten listings.

Businesses simply cannot afford to linger on page two or beyond, as user attention dwindles significantly beyond the first page.

In essence, freelancers and business owners must:

  1. Establish a website or online presence, even if their products or services are primarily offline
  2. Implement SEO strategies to ensure high rankings on page one for relevant keywords

Keywords are the bridge connecting users to content that answers their questions and provides solutions. They are the search queries—words, phrases, sentences, and questions—that users input into search engines. Search engines match these keywords with relevant content on websites, prioritizing those with the highest relevance.

In the realm of SEO, identifying keywords critical to your business is paramount. This process, known as keyword research, involves pinpointing search terms people use when seeking offerings similar to yours. The goal? Attracting relevant traffic—prospective customers—to your website throughout their entire journey.

Keyword optimization is the cornerstone of crafting content tailored to rank highly in search results. To achieve relevance, you focus on topics and questions related to specific keywords on individual pages or URLs. Your target keyword should appear strategically throughout the page, from the URL and title to headings and body content.

Imagine you're in the ice cream business, specializing in 's'mores ice cream sandwiches.' You'd create a dedicated recipe page for this treat, complete with an easy-to-follow recipe, enticing visuals, and comprehensive answers to common questions. Your focus keyword, 's'mores ice cream sandwich,' should feature prominently in the page's elements.

By providing a dedicated, keyword-optimized page, you simplify the process for search engines—and users—to understand your content's relevance, leading to favorable rankings in related search queries.

Begin by exploring the Advisor's board via the top navigation bar. It features a Kanban-style layout that helps organize tasks by status, color-coded for importance:

  • Red: High priority. Address promptly.
  • Yellow: Medium priority. Tackle soon.
  • Blue: Low priority. Keep in mind and resolve when feasible.

You can easily drag and drop tasks as you complete them, assign tasks to other users (depending on your plan), and filter tasks by assignee.

Tasks encompass both standard SEO practices and issues identified during weekly automated audits of your website, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

It's important to note that the Advisor feature requires a Project to function. Additionally, most tasks within the Advisor are tailored to a specific website associated with the Project—typically yours or your client's. If you manage multiple websites, you'll need to create a separate Project for each.

To add or switch to another project, simply navigate to the Projects menu in the top navigation bar. Depending on your plan, you may need to upgrade to add additional Projects.

To assign tasks to other users, your plan must allow for additional users. If your plan includes this feature, you'll find the Assignee option within the Advisor and individual tasks. Simply select a user to assign a task or filter tasks by assignee. To add a new user, click your profile avatar, then select Users. If your plan doesn't include additional users, you won't see the Assignee option. Consider upgrading your plan to add users.

There are two reasons why you might encounter tasks you've previously addressed. Firstly, tasks covering basic SEO practices are universal and not tailored to your specific website or business. For instance, we're unaware if you've set up a Google account for your business or installed SEO plugins. If you've completed these tasks, simply mark them as done.

Secondly, the Advisor automatically updates based on the results of weekly automated Site Audits. If a Site Audit uncovers issues related to a previously completed task, it will reappear in the Open section for attention.

Perhaps you've pondered, 'But why should I care about my visibility for irrelevant keywords?' And you're absolutely right. While overall Visibility offers insights into general website performance, it may not align with your specific keyword set.

Enter Project Visibility. This metric mirrors Visibility but exclusively considers keywords tracked in your Rank Tracker, tailored to your business's unique needs.

Project Visibility provides a custom score based solely on keywords relevant to your business, ensuring a more accurate representation of your online presence.

Accessible under Projects → Rank Tracker → Visibility, you can also monitor competitors' rankings alongside yours, facilitating realistic comparisons based on shared keywords.

Utilize your Visibility score to gauge overall SEO performance, identify issues, and uncover optimization opportunities.

1. Assess Overall SEO Performance

While tracking individual keyword rankings is essential, it doesn't provide a holistic view of your progress. Visibility offers a comprehensive snapshot of your SEO efforts, reflecting improvements in rankings and overall performance.

2. Diagnose SEO Issues

A sudden drop in Visibility serves as an alert to potential SEO issues. Investigate the cause: It could stem from a Google penalty, algorithm updates, or heightened competition. Identifying the root cause is crucial for prompt resolution.

3. Competitive Analysis

Compare your Visibility score with competitors to gauge relative performance. Identify areas of strength and weakness, informing your SEO strategy to maintain or surpass competitors.

4. Historical Tracking

Access historical Visibility data to track long-term performance trends. This historical perspective offers valuable insights into your SEO journey, facilitating informed decision-making and strategy refinement.

Here's the deal: Focusing solely on improving Visibility isn't the way to go in your SEO strategy.

Here's why: Visibility is a metric that reflects the quality of your rankings, not a direct path to better rankings themselves. Instead, aim to enhance your rankings for relevant keywords—ones that potential customers actually use to find products and services like yours. By boosting your rankings, you'll naturally improve your Visibility, too. But remember, it's your rankings that truly count.

As a general rule, your Visibility score will rise if:

  • Your domain's URLs rank well
  • You have many indexed URLs ranking highly
  • You perform well for keywords with substantial search volume
